Microfiber Cleaning 101

What is microfiber?
Microfiber is a blend of polyester and polymide(a type of nylon).  Microfibers are 10 times smaller than the average human hair. and these microscopic fibers are split in such a way to make them even smaller.  This produces exponential  amounts of surface area and all of this surface area is what makes microfiber so absorbent, and it what gives it its magnetic attraction to dust, dirt and grime.

Is all microfiber the same?
No. There are two blends of microfiber. 70% polyester and 30% polymide (70/30) and 80% polyester and 20% polymide.  70/30 is common in European manufacturing, while 80/20 is most commonly manufactured in the Far East.  It has been proven through testing that there is no significant difference in these two types, the key difference is the amount of fibers in the material. which is used in  determining the denier (a microscopic weight measurement) and how the material was woven.

What determines cleaning performance?
The shape and size of the fibers is a key to it's performance.  Better performance depends on how small the fibers are.  A triangular shaped fiber will also work better than a rectangular or ribbon shaped fiber.  Also the percentage that the fiber is split and the percentage of microfiber that is in the material is very important.  Maintaining these high percentages is critical in the quality control process, in order to maintain a high quality of microfiber.

What determines microfiber quality?
The actual time required to knit or weave the microfiber and the type of machine used are the keys to the quality of microfiber.  There are two simple tests in determining the quality of your microfiber:

1. Does the material stretch in two directions?
2. Can the pile be pulled out easily?

If you can answer yes  to one or both of these questions then your microfiber has a lower quality.

Why does microfiber clean so well?
Gym Floor Resource offers the finest microfiber available for our dust mops.  The microscopic fibers get down into the invisible crevices and lift out contaminants, dirt, and other particulates that other fibers can't reach.

How long does microfiber last?
There are two factors that determine how long microfiber will last.  The first is how the microfiber is used.  For light cleaning uses, such as walls, sinks and showers, microfiber will tolerate longer uses.  For heavier duty cleanings, such as machinery, and food service type equipment, the lifespan of microfiber will be shorter.  The second factor is  how the microfiber is laundered.  Our microfibers will last 400-500 applications if the following laundering advice is followed:

Machine wash at temperatures that do not exceed 200 degrees and tumble dry at temperatures between 130-140 degrees.
Avoid fabric softener or dryer sheets, as they will clog the crevices in the fabric and reduce the static charge that makes the microfiber effective.
Use color safe detergents with an overall pH under 11.
Wash microfiber with microfiber and avoid washing them with other fabrics that lint.

Can I use microfiber with cleaners and sanitizers?
Yes. Chemicals may be used where needed without harming the mops or cloths.  However, chemicals aren't necessary with microfiber.  Microfiber is non-abrasive on all surfaces, even when used with cleaners and sanitizers.  Microfiber ensures that no residue is left on the cleaned surface and also reduces the concentration and the amount of cleaner that is required.
